Weekend story

What we wear at home is one thing, but staying out of the city with friends in their country house or a fancy boutique hotel for a nifty weekend , well that’s quite another. Out with the old pilled sweaters and in with the new. The knitwear collection from Winser London, launched this September, is truly delicious and in lovely new colours. My grandmother always said not to wear black in the country! Well, I know times have changed, but I still think it’s true and a good opportunity to leave all that black in town. Two of my favourites from Winser London are the long cardigan with leather patch pockets, and the fisherman’s rib sweater. They are both in the softest grey, 100% merino wool. Both will look perfect with the Winser trouser and some flat ankle boots.

The cardigan can double as a coat and both are perfect for outdoors kicking up the Autumn leaves and indoors too. Indoors can be really chilly – I live in London which is definitely warmer – so sweaters in various weights and colours are a good weekend uniform. Dress a sweater up for dinner with jewellery and shawls and wear rich reds to be the centre of attention.

This seasons’ trench, in tan or black techno fabric, is that great classic we can’t live without. Country walks or a visit to a stately home and garden in the Autumn certainly doesn’t need a big coat and this trench is smart as a pin. For added warmth and glamour add the sheepskin fur collar.

Trousers are the thing for the country weekend. The cotton stretch gabardine in neutral colours looks right with all the silk shirts, sweaters, smart casual. And yes, we do need something black and any of the new chic trousers with a coloured blouse or sweater will look great for dinner. Job done.
