Interview with Rose Leslie

My Woman of Substance for October is the fabulous 28 year-old Scottish actress, Rose Leslie. Born and raised in Aberdeenshire, Rose is best known for playing Ygritte in the fantasy series, Game of Thrones, and Gwen Dawson in the ITV drama series, Downton Abbey. She spent three years at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 2008. She made her debut in the 2009 television film New Town, for which she won the Scottish BAFTA for Best Acting Performance – New Talent Award.

We met for a coffee when Rose was in London recently.

Rose, you are witch hunting at the moment working on The Last Witch Hunter, do please tell us about it.

I have had a lot of fun working on this film! Essentially, The Last Witch Hunter is a supernatural action movie with Vin Diesel playing the immortal Witch Hunter. He reluctantly has to team up with a witch and together they try and destroy the evil Queen Witch.

What was the defining moment of your career so far?

A phone call from my agent telling me the good news that I had managed to get the part of Emma Lane in the new season of Luther. I have always been obsessed with this show and so getting it was a dream come true.

What is your favourite character that you have played to date?

So far, my favourite character to date has been playing Ygritte in Game of Thrones.

The Winser London team loves Game of Thrones, what was your best memory of filming it in Iceland?

Iceland is a truly mesmerising country and I have a deep love for it now. My best memories have to be the vast landscapes that we filmed on. Never before had I seen such natural beauty on such a large scale.

How little does Jon Snow really know?

Quite literally, nothing at all.

You are often cast as characters in uniform, animal skins or covered in soot – poor you! How would you describe your personal style off-screen?

I would say my personal style is modern and understated.

Which do you prefer – dressing up for a premiere or casual cashmere jumper at home?

Has to be the jumper! A Winser London cashmere one!

You travel so much with your career, do you still feel innately British?

On the whole I am British but I also feel very proud to call myself Scottish.

What do you most look forward to when you come home?

My younger sister regaling stories from her day!

What are your top three travel tips?

Always stash extra cash, try and meet the local people and get lost on purpose.

What is your favourite piece from the Winser London AW15 Collection?

It would have to be the Lauren silk blouse and bow. I love it!

The Last Witch Hunter is out on 21st October
