Modern Muse – Paloma Picasso

Paloma Picasso, Pablo Picasso’s youngest daughter, was always well recognised for her strong, dark looks. She appeared in many of his paintings and played a starring role in the 1980s New York and Paris scenes. Her close friends were a mix of artists, socialites and designers, such as Andy Warhol and Yves Saint Laurent. Her mother, Françoise Gilot, introduced her to the world of high fashion early on and she forged her own sense of a unique style. Her striking black hair and flash of red lipstick have always been her trademark. She says of fashion in those early days, “the world of fashion was a much easier, more creative world. Money was not its centre”. She is a jewellery designer and has always created for Tiffany’s. Her own choices to wear are gold and bold, and nowadays she dresses simply and says her clothes provide a background to her jewellery. She often appears in photographs in beautiful white shirts in cotton, silk and organza. In the 1980s she wore striking, dramatic and colourful outfits, often by Saint Laurent. She no longer attends fashion shows but keeping an eye on magazines, she has embraced the freedom of the way we dress now and her new collection for Tiffany’s has a more casual, delicate feel. I was the Fashion Editor on a shoot when we photographed Paloma for British Vogue and she was both gracious and charming but quite serious, almost severe, so it is lovely to see her today with a beautiful smile in every picture; she has an innate ease.
