What is poplin? The term poplin originates from papelino, a fabric finish made in France in the 15th century. Poplin is a fabric weave, so a cotton poplin shirt, dress or skirt is a garment in cotton or another yarn in a dense poplin weave. In the case of the Winser London items there is also a tiny bit of stretch to give fit and the handle is crisp and summery and reminds me of men’s shirts, school dresses and 50s frocks. Now I am thinking about it as the summer version of the Miracle fabric and the Winser London team have created a new dress collection in poplin that is smart and fun. The wrap Coat Dress in black is super chic, with statement pockets to give an hourglass effect.
The Marilyn Cotton Dress in a curvy cut has a shawl collar in a crossover shape with soft pleat detailing, all very flattering. The Sleeveless Dress has pockets trimmed with gold buttons and in white is the perfect summer holiday dress and very popular with the fashion editors too. There are two more dresses equally fab the Shirt Dress and the Broderie Anglaise dress. Quite a collection. Also in this innovative fabric there are three shirt styles, two of them designed to tuck into a skirt or trouser. The shirts are in different lengths and proportions, one has gold buttons, one is short and sharp and perfect with a cotton Capri and one is a longer over-shirt great with leggings. The colours are real keepers; navy, black, white, and a pale blue. This summer’s fashion prescription is easy-peasy
