When I first went to live in Rome the chic Roman women always had a serape to hand. No handbag was too small for a tiny pashmina to be secreted inside. Wisps of cashmere worn over the head for a spin in an Alfa, a cover up for a cool outdoor restaurant, a wrap for an evening party, la dolce vita. I was so impressed to see the bright cashmere and wool throws and ponchos that I never looked back. Consequently I have been collecting ever since.
This season’s poncho or serape (South American pre-Hispanic words to describe the poncho with a central hole for the head and the serape without) just tick all my boxes. Over leggings they are very street. To be practical they are hands free; to be chic try cream. Layered even with a collar of fur. And the not so dolce vita moments: aren’t they great for curling up on the sofa? Winser London has three in the collection in a variety of colours.
So one for every day of the week. The poncho in black, blue, red, ivory, purple, camel and grey, £99, in a stunning soft yarn mix of cashmere and wool. There are two capes: Cashmere at £250, in ivory, black, grey or Hollywood red, and Merino wool reversible cape, £125, in black/camel and mink/vintage rose.
Don’t miss the Merino wool knitted tweed cape, £150, very hip and street – one for Alexa Chung. And last but not least, three scarf and stole styles to add to our collection. The Winser Cashmere wrap has ten colours to choose from, £150. The Luxurious Oversized wrap in cashmere is in seven colours, £250. The Gossamer cotton wrap, £50, is super soft and amazingly cosy in Red, Winser Blue and Vintage Rose. Accessorise with the pompom knitted hat in a host of nifty toning colours.
