Years ago, when I was painting a remote farmhouse up in the hills of Santa Fe all white, it was pointed out to me by lugubrious locals that the red earth would constantly splash and dirty my white concept. I followed the local wisdom and opted for dark green shutters and terracotta floors, kilims and faded wood. Ergo, my wardrobe changed too: I went for earthy colours, as opposed to white linen and stripes. If you are planning a Peruvian potter or a Texan travel, I recommend delving into the Winser summer collection and checking out the chilli pepper, nutmeg, hibiscus and camel, especially if your holiday involves animals, i.e. safari, where blending in is de-rigueur.
My accessories tip: desert boots by Penelope Chilvers. Or cowboy boots and turquoise jewellery.
