Isabelle Huppert is one of France’s most revered actors, both on screen and on stage. She has always been adored by edgy directors and photographers. Extremely private and unashamedly cerebral, she is an acute thinker who doesn’t squander words. This year she won the Best Actress Golden Globe for her lead in Elle. Since then, she has appeared more and more on our radar, much interviewed and photographed. So, it is delightful to catch a glimpse of this wonderful actor looking so elegant on the red carpet. Other award ceremony actors surprise and often not in a good way with acres of flesh on show. Respect for Huppert in her chic sleeved and slinky gowns, often by Armani Privé. For the Globes, it was softest blue chiffon, almost sheer, with a bodice encrusted with beads. She has also been seen in a current fashion favourite: the bow blouse, tied insouciantly loose, of course. She wears Chanel jackets but also J. Crew; I’ve seen lots of photos of her in different blazers. Jeans also feature and black leather jackets, and she has been seen wearing cream trouser suits for evening and a black tuxedo. At 63, she is one of fashion’s cool girls; a front row fixture at the collections. Physically petite, trim, elegant and seemingly ageless, she lives in Paris, bien sûr, is married to the director Ronald Chammah and is a mother of three. Off duty, she wears other Parisian favourites: the Breton striped sweater, scarves and hooped gold earrings. She owns her clothes in the same way that she inhabits the parts she plays; this is not woman playing dress-up. A truly alluring adult.
