Nicky Brown, Winser London Ambassador

Nicky Brown, Winser London Ambassador – interview by Kim Winser

The Winser London Ambassador Programme was launched in February this year and the first season has been hugely exciting. A modern, personal way of selling through small, private trunk show events, this unique programme offers a flexible, fun and fulfilling way for well-networked women with an interest in fashion and quality clothes to make an income in a way that fits with their busy lives and is both sociable and stimulating.

Nicky Brown is one of Winser London’s launch season Ambassadors and has had a very busy first few months – and a lot of fun. Nicky lives between two homes in Beverley, Yorkshire - her townhouse and the family home which she shares with her father. Her greatest achievement is her only child, Sam, who is almost 21 and approaching his final year in Newcastle studying business. He has just completed a year in London at the Financial Times as a placement and is currently having a ball in Thailand for three weeks. Nicky is super-sociable and spends any spare time she has with friends and family. She plays tennis, is an avid walker and works hard to support many local charities.

We met at the Winser London Design Studio to talk about how Nicky is enjoying her new role as Ambassador and to give her a preview of the Autumn/Winter collection…

Nicky, you have brought a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm to the Ambassador Programme and we’d love to hear what you enjoy most about your new role and how it plays to your strengths and passions.

I thoroughly enjoy working with Winser London. My role as an Ambassador for the brand has given me the chance to showcase beautiful, high-quality clothes that are affordable and work for everyone. This role plays to my real passion and to what I know best - I have been in the fashion business all of my working life. After A’ levels, together with my younger sister, I started a mobile fashion business which soon blossomed into a very popular boutique selling ladies’ and children's designer clothing. I’m also really sociable, so a role that gets me out meeting like-minded women couldn’t be better!

You have always had a keen interest in fashion – how do you make trends work for you and what is your own look?

I adore fashion and from an early age have loved buying clothes and getting dressed up! At 52 I am more aware that style is important and I try to keep an eye out for trends that suit me – particularly those that are sympathetic to my body shape. My own style is a combination of classic pieces mixed with on-trend styles. I am often told that I am “stylish”, which is a great compliment and really helps to sell a look when I am wearing my Winser London Ambassador’s hat!

Which Winser London pieces are your favourites and how do you wear them?

My personal favourite pieces are, without question, the Lauren Silk Tunic and Tie in Champagne worn together with the Wide Leg Flat Front Trousers in Pearl. I have had massive compliments every time I’ve worn this look. The Grace Miracle Dress is another favourite - three of my friends bought it after seeing it on me – it’s just so easy to wear and makes us all feel fabulous. The Merino Wool Parisian Dress in Ivory/Midnight worn with the Milano Blazer in Midnight– this outfit was very popular both on holiday and at local events and much liked by all of the guests at my Ambassador events.

Your first season as an Ambassador has been very successful - not only have you hosted private events at your home and at the houses of friends and family, but you have partnered with 5* hotels, luxury spas and hair salons. How did you plan your first season?

I have a huge network of friends, customers old and new and many contacts through my charity work. It was easy to organise events as most women are keen to experience a new label - particularly if you project the right image when you first meet them and really get the quality of the collection across well.

The Winser London team offers guidance to Ambassadors as to how to host their events, but everyone adds their own personal touch. Do please tell us what type of events have been your most enjoyable and successful and why?

My favourite event was held in a very cool hair salon owned by a stylish lady, Vicky Newman, who invited all of her clients to come throughout the day. Every single guest bought something from the Winser London collection – we had great feedback and a return visit is planned. Also a charity fashion show went down very well – it was such fun - and showed the versatility of the collection. The styles are so cleverly-cut and the fabrics of such high quality that they just suit all ages. It makes my job very easy!

Which Autumn/Winter 2015 trends are you looking forward to wearing?

I am looking forward to the new season’s layering trend – it’s so chic to wear layers of different fabrics and yarns all in the same colour. Winser London makes it incredibly easy to do this – the Midnight Navy in layers of cashmere or the Milano Merino, layered over the co-ordinating silk will be so on–trend, so luxurious and so ‘me’! And it goes without saying I can’t wait for the new Ladies who Lunch trend (chic tweeds, timeless coats, knitted separates, demure polo necks, elegant midi skirts, neat jackets - all in rich fabrics). Again, this plays to Winser London’s strengths as the collection is full of all the key pieces a woman could ever want to channel this trend.

What are you planning for the AW15 season?

I have several events planned - four of them being Christmas fairs, which I know will be very busy. I also have a fashion show planned for October and a return to my hair stylist, who promotes the brand very well.

What advice would you give to anyone considering becoming an Ambassador?

Wear it. It sells itself!

What does being a Winser London Ambassador involve?
The Winser London team provide each Ambassador with training about the new season’s collection, tips on how to get started and with marketing materials. Each Ambassador chooses their own edit of the new collection and contributes to the cost of their sample clothes. The Ambassador then invites their contacts to small events throughout the season, using a Winser London personalized email-invitation, and hosts the event. Guests have the opportunity to feel the luxurious quality of the exclusive fabrics and yarns, to try on samples and can make purchases at the event, with a commission earned by the Ambassador on each transaction as she processes it through our website. The guest’s chosen items are beautifully wrapped and delivered promptly to their home by the Winser London team. It’s as simple and as easy as that!
