She is the creative force behind some of Winser London’s most iconic pieces. Here, designer Jayne Cady talks style secrets, inspiring women and her favourite designs.
Tell us about your career journey
I started life as a Friday girl in a London fashion showroom where I experienced the creative and commercial elements of a growing fashion brand. I later joined the M&S Management Training Programme for Buyers, where I became a Senior Buyer.
I was poached by an entrepreneur to set up and run a design and sales office to identify current trends, designing and delivering bestsellers to top retailers. This led to a role as a Product Consultant working with Aquascutum, where I later became Global Product Director for womenswear and menswear with Kim Winser. Kim, on setting up Winser London, invited me to join her to realise her vision.
How would you describe the Winser Woman?
A discerning woman of all ages. We aim to appeal to three generations of women with our modern wardrobe staples. The Winser Woman has an appreciation for elegant, quality designs and chooses to invest in clothes that stand the test of time.
Who inspires you in work, life and style?
I’m inspired by confident women with a desire and drive to succeed. Women who are living their lives to the fullest and helping others along the way. Michelle Obama, Meghan Markle, Maria Grazia, Stella McCartney, Caroline Issa and Gillian Anderson to name but a few.
Talk us through a typical day and the design process at Winser London…
The beauty of my role is the variety. Each day is quite different to the next.
What is your favourite Winser London piece, and why?
That’s a tough question. That’s like asking to choose your favourite child! Currently I’m loving the Faux Leather Trousers - which I’m living in. They’re made of waxed cotton with a little bit of stretch and they're machine washable. I wear them with long sleeve linen tees and merino or cashmere jumpers.
Who have you been most excited to see wearing Winser London, and who would you like to see wearing it?
There are many ladies I’m thrilled to see wear Winser London, especially when they smile at themselves in the mirror after finding their perfect piece. Just this weekend, whilst walking along the sea front, I spotted an elegant lady wearing a Winser London coat. I couldn’t help but introduce myself to say how fab she looked.
I enjoyed working with the lovely Yasmin Le Bon and Gillian Anderson. Both collaborated with us to design capsule collections. My wish is to help more women find their signature style and be their most confident selves.
What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve ever received?
Be true to yourself and believe in yourself.
How would you describe your personal style?
Less is more. I’m not shy of a pop of colour.
What’s your top tip for effortless 9-5 style?
Keep it simple and choose quality fabrics that wear well over time. Wear clothes that fit and dress for yourself. If you like colour, wear colour. If you like heels, wear heels. If you like bold lipstick, wear bold lipstick. Just remember to complement statement pieces with neutral elements.
